FUT (Strip method)

The number of operations with FUT has decreased in favor of the FUE method.

FUT (Strip method)

FUT was superior to punsch-graft technology. But now it's most often FUE method that counts. Clinics that do not perform FUE may suggest FUT, and then it's good that you know what it's all about.

When Thomas Ribohn in 1991 visited one of the most famous hair transplant surgeons in Brazil, Dr. Carlos Uebel, hair transplants were still carried out almost exclusively as "punsch grafts". Everyone has seen people with "doll hair" or hair resembling a brush. These operations also left white rut patterns in the back of the head.

But Uebel belonged to the pioneers, who began to apply a new method: A tapered strip of skin was cut out of the back, the wound was sewn carefully to give as thin a scarlet as possible and in the meantime a number of employees separated the graft from the drawn strip. Thomas became a very good friend with Dr. Uebel, and brought the new method to Sweden when he started the New Hair Clinic in Lund in 1992.

During the 1990s, we performed thousands of strip operations, and refined our technology. We eventually learned that it was better to take a little less wide strips, thus sewing together the wound without having to undermine the skin edges several centimeters. At the same time, the technology developed to separate hair follicles, the game became minimal. Our suture technique was also improved, during FUT's last year at the clinic, we saw that hair follicles from the upper wound could push down their hairs in the future scarring line - "Trichophytic Closure".

But we noticed that more and more of our patients demanded the FUE method, and then we saw a dramatic shift towards the latter method's advantage in just half a year. We can still take out a strip, but reserve the method to situations when you already have a crazy scar after previous intervention. At the right conditions one can hope for a thinner is, and this is usually the first priority, not to get a large crop of graft.

It should also be borne in mind that some patients get wide scars, regardless of surgical technique. We have had patients with very elastic necklaces repeatedly, surgery has gone smoothly and has had great hopes for an almost invisible scar. And instead, the patient has shown a usually smooth, perhaps 7-8 mm wide hairless strip. If you cut this and then back together, the result usually has become the same. Wound healing can not always be controlled or anticipated.
